A property for nature lovers with an eye to capital gains. Live a peaceful lifestyle, swimming, walking, fishing, growing your own veggies, or market to beach loving tourists wanting to escape busy areas. The phone signal is good enough to work online and there is access to optic fibre if needed.  

We custom built the beach house on one of the last, undeveloped sandy beaches in Bali. At high tide the water is lapping just a few metres from the pool. At low tide the beach is wide with firm sand ideal for long walks and bike riding. At night the sounds are gentle lapping of wavelets on the beach.  

The house only occupies half the land. You can keep the large gardens, or build on the other half, or subdivide the land into 2 x 5are beachfront titles. It’s a real genuine Bali vibe and it’s still quiet for now.. but villa development has already begun. Sometime there will be an East-West toll road and sandy beaches are a premium resource in Bali so it will be a good investment.

We’re eco-friendly so we kept the native trees on the beachfront, we prune parts of them to maintain sea views and sea breezes. The landscaped garden has trees creating shade keeping the property cool. We often sit on the beach at sunset. The broad expanse of sea, gorgeous skies, and dramatic volcanoes on Java are spectacular.  

Walking East along 1 1/2kms of the beach there’s a few villas and a lovely sunset spot with local food up on a headland. Walking West is 4kms of protected beach where Bali Barat National Park meets the sea. If you’re a bird-watcher, 5mins away there’s an easy walking track to the top of a rainforest covered mountain, the only place in Bali you’ll see hornbills on Bali. There’s also a lovely waterfall nearby.

There’s no surf on this coast, it’s a place for swimming, snorkelling, fishing and boating. We had a 4m aluminium boat that we pulled up on the beach. That little ‘speedboat’ gave us access to the long coast before Gillimanuk, to Secret Bay (one of the World’s best ‘muck dives’) and further to Menjangan Island. For a while, we had a small yacht on a mooring in front of the house. (The reason we’re selling the property is that we now have a boat in Raja Ampat)

The best hot springs in Bali (clean & hot) are at Mimpi Resort only 35mins away. The tourist centre of Pemuteran is 45mins on one of the best, and prettiest, main roads in Bali. The city of Negara, with shopping and a hospital, is 30mins on the highway.

The international airport in Banyuwangi is 90mins away including the ferry ride from Gillimanuk.

The open-plan house is concrete & local stone below, custom timber above. The bathroom is defined by its beautiful timber floor, the raised bathtub and its limestone walls. Upstairs the floors, walls and main structure are made from beautiful farm timbers (no rainforest timbers were used). A local craftsman laminated and shaped the structural timbers. The joinery and woodworking is truly artful.

We designed it to be a comfortable, low impact but ‘next level’ family beach house. We wanted some luxuries but we wanted it to feel really organic. We run an eco lodge in the mountains so our beach house had to meet those same environmental standards.

The structure of the large upstairs verandah was built with recycled boat timbers. The floors are a beautiful local wood finished with tung oil. The strong laminated timber structure means the grass roof could be changed for tiles or another roofing material.

The separate kitchen building has a lovely timber-top breakfast bar. We often eat lunch and dinner there too. The house has a lovely, and very competent, local, cook and housekeeper. Her name is Sri.

The waterfront pool, raised to just above beach level, has split-level terraces, with sunny & shady spots. The beachfront trees give privacy while keeping sea views and breezes.

The village streets are quiet, pretty and friendly, excellent for bike riding or walks. The village has a good rubbish collection and management system in place. We’ve lived in the mountains in Bali for more than 20years, we know that different areas have different ‘vibes’. This village, Sumber Sari, is a very easy, and very pleasant, community to live in.
