Only keep in mind the traditions of Balinese people. They have a lot of ceremonies during the year which they are celebrating. It is normal that the Balinese are not working during their ceremonies. Authorities and banks are closed during those days.
Prices of living in Bali are much lower than in Western countries. With your Euro or Dollar, you can afford a lot. It will give you a comfortable life on this island. This is, together with the nice climate, the reason that a lot of retired people are nowadays living here for permanent.
It is very normal that you keep a maid in your house. This is not something luxurious or “colonial”, but a normal standard for foreigner. The costs for a maid (a so called “pembantu”) are not to high. It is normal that the maid is living in your house, in a small separate room. She will usually prepare your meals and clean the house. Some are also taking care of your children.
All together, this will give you a nice relaxing live on this island.
